SMBA Devo Team

Grade 2-7

Devo offers riders the chance to ride half days with the SMBA program 2 days per week.

SMBA Devo Team is the perfect next step between camps and Team. These riders have experience on the trail and are looking to improve both their speed and efficiency on the trail. Devo rides will meet and pick up at trail heads along the front range including Betasso, Heil, Doudy Draw, Walker Ranch and more.

Each Devo session includes advanced coaching, singletrack trail riding, community stewardship, “Big Buddy, Little Buddy” mentoring, special events, fun days, support at optional races and more.  Each week is designed with hard days, easier days, longer days, shorter days, skills days and fun days.

Skill Levels

The SMBA Devo Team is perfect for riders interested in training regularly and preparing for the SMBA Team and/or racing.

Riders will be split into groups by ability.

Trails

Monday- Betasso boasts 2 super fun loops and epic descents. Each rider will get to explore this beautiful forest, tackle short technical sections.

Tuesday- Heil is a very fun front range classic. Riders will get to charge through fun rock gardens and a technical climb that leads to additional loops and trails.

Wednesday- The Developement Team will have special events each Wednesday. The coaches will let parents know where to be each Wednesday throughout the summer. Riders might meet at a new trail, meet for a community stewardship project, meet for a team camaraderie exercise or enjoy a fun recovery day.

Thursday- Daudy Draw is one of the SMBA favorites. This trail has something for everyone including mellow meadow crossings, challenging climbs and winding descents through the tree.

What to Bring

To insure a safe and pleasant day of cycling, please be sure that your child’s bike is in good working condition. Please visit Tin Shed Sports for a free safety check. Other local shops provide safety checks for a nominal fee.

  • Spare tube (check the tube size and valve type)

  • $5 for special treats

Nutritious Items that hold up on the trail include:
Nut butters, jerky, apples, oranges, energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, string cheese, hummus, pretzels, cold pizza, burritos, carrots, celery, radishes, sugar snap peas, sliced bell peppers, and sandwiches.

Please avoid:
Most dairy products (e.g. yogurt, milk, soft cheese), fragile fruit (e.g. bananas, strawberries, grapes), sodas, mayonnaise, and high sugar snacks. SMBA does not allow athletes to consume caffeine at SMBA practices, races or camps.

Day in a Life

Drop off: Drop off for Devo programming is at the trail head indicated on the schedule. At drop off there will be a coach there to great you, as well as, other campers being dropped off. Riders are asked to arrive on time and check in with their coach. This is a great time to speak with the coach about any allergies, medical issues or concerns you may have. Please remind your athlete that riding at this time is not OK. Please make sure that your athlete is prepared for the morning or afternoon before leaving. This includes: Bike, shoes, helmet, tube, small tool, water and food. After everyone has been checked in, the athletes will then go with their coach and begin training activities.

Ride: SMBA Devo Team rides are fast, fun and fantastic. Training will focus on fitness and skill, following the same training pattern as the SMBA Team. Some days training will focus on mileage while other days will be skilled focused where the technical difficulty is increased and the distance is decreased.

Snack and Lunch: Fuel is important for a successful adventure. Riders and coaches will take water breaks often and stop for several snacks while out on the trail.

Pick Up: SMBA Team athletes will return to the drop off location at the end of each ride. Athletes may ride home if they have a signed permission slip. If a group will be late, we will do our best to notify parents and guardians as soon as possible. Please allow for a small window as ride lengths can vary. At the end of the ride coaches will be present to assist with questions and to let parents/guardians know if any issues arose during the ride. Parents are encouraged to speak with the coaches about their child’s progress. At the end of the session each athlete will also receive a end of session evaluation. Please go over this with your child and feel free to ask your coach any questions about an athlete’s progress.
