Overnight weekend adventure trip, Camping, Riding, Fun!
Athletes will spend an extended weekend camping and exploring trails outside of Boulder County in Colorado or Wyoming (e.g., Fruita, Canyon City/Lake Pueblo, Curt Gowdy). SMBA’s Mini Adventure Trips are geared towards athletes who want to get out in the backcountry and explore new trails new terrain outside of their normal riding areas. Some trips may include the opportunity to participate in a mountain bike race.
Each adventure trip helps athletes build character, learn navigation and camping skills and dial-in mountain biking skills.
Spring and Fall Mini Adventure Trips coincide with scheduled BVSD no-school days.
SMBA coaches guide athletes through each new trail or trail system in a safe, fun, supportive, and non-competitive environment. Program Fees for the Mini-Adventure trips include van transportation, camping fees, campsite meals and snacks, and coaching for the duration of the trip.

Bike & Equipment Requirements for Mini-Adventure Trips
- Athletes must be in at least 5th grade at the time of the trip and have previously participated in SMBA Team or Camp rides; or have mountain biking experience on intermediate to advanced singletrack trails (Adventure trip rides are full day, challenging rides, on intermediate to advanced trail systems).
- Athletes must be comfortable camping in rustic conditions with other SMBA athletes and coaches away from home for multiple days in areas with limited cell phone coverage. Athletes must also be responsible enough to clean up after themselves and maintain their personal belongings for the entire duration of the trip.
- Athletes must bring a reliable, safely fitting mountain bike in good working condition with tires, brakes, and gearing appropriate for rugged singletrack trails and steep terrain. We recommend bikes with at least 26” wheels and working suspension if the bike has it (either front or full suspension). Athletes must also have a well-fitting helmet in good condition and hydration pack capable of carrying the following items during the rides: 100oz water, food/snacks for the ride, handpump, tube/patch kit, multi-tool, and rain jacket.
- Athletes must bring necessary camping equipment which includes: a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, mess kit, toiletries, and appropriate post-ride/camp hangout clothing. A detailed camp checklist will be sent out to registered participants a week or two before the camp begins.
- Athletes are expected to come prepared for camping and riding in the backcountry! This means showing up with a positive attitude, helping teammates and coaches with campsite meals and campsite clean-up, being flexible with unexpected camping, weather, or ride challenges, bringing proper tools to fix a flat or make minor trailside adjustments and repairs, having proper clothing for weather and unexpected weather changes, and proper safety equipment (e.g., helmet, gloves, and sunglasses).
