Nederland Team
Mountain biking in Ned for junior athletes of the Peak-to-Peak region.
Founded in Nederland in 1993, SMBA has provided opportunities for junior athletes in the peak-to-peak region for almost 30 years. We continue to offer a Nederland-specific mountain biking program giving junior riders the opportunity to explore and ride local trails, receive quality coaching, and to build skills and confidence on their bikes.
We offer Spring, Summer, and Fall programming in Nederland for athletes in 2nd grade and up.

Spring:
Spring after school rides are designed to get athletes out on the trail, ready for summer and having fun. Athletes meet after school and ride to the trails from there. The Nederland Spring session is 2 weeks shorter than Boulder due to the unpredictable nature of spring in Colorado. The Spring Team offers ride programs for both elementary and middle/high school athletes.
The Spring Team Program has ride options for both elementary school and middle/high school aged athletes:
- Elementary School (2nd – 5th grade): Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:35-5:35pm
- Middle/High School (6th grade & up): Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4pm – 6pm
Summer:
Each summer day begins and ends in Nederland and includes advanced coaching, singletrack trail riding, community stewardship, special events/rides, combo rides with the Boulder team, and tons of fun on the bike. This session is perfect for athletes who love to ride and never seem to want to stop. Riding 4 days a week for 4 weeks is a lot of riding, so each week is designed with hard days, easier days, longer days, shorter days, skills days and fun days.
The Summer Team program has part-time and full-time options:
Summer Session I – Part Time 4 Days (pick any 4 Days to ride during Session I)
- Summer Session I – Part Time 8 Days (pick any 8 days to ride during Session I)
- Summer Session I – Full Time 16 Days (includes all ride days of Session I)
- Summer Session II – Part Time 4 Days (pick any 4 days to ride during Session II)
- Summer Session II – Part Time 8 Days (pick any 8 days to ride during Session II)
- Summer Session II – Full Time 16 Days (includes all ride days in Session II)
(Athletes signed up for part-time options RSVP for ride days through sign up genius sheet at least 24 hours before a ride)
(Part-time days are non-transferrable across sessions)
Fall:
Fall session is a great way to extend the mountain bike season! The weather is beautiful, the trails are mint, and the fun is endless.
The Fall Team program has ride options for both elementary school and middle/high school aged athletes:
- Elementary School (2nd – 5th grade): Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:35 – 5:35pm
- Middle/High School (6th grade &up): Mondays & Wednesdays, 4pm – 6pm
Equipment Requirements for Team Rides:
- Athletes must have a properly fitting, trail-ready mountain bike in good working condition with adequate tires & gearing for a variety of terrain on singletrack trails. We recommend bikes with at least 24” sized tires (minimum 20″ for our younger elementary school aged athletes).
- Athletes must have a comfortable hydration pack or backpack with a water reservoir and enough space to comfortably carry the following items: enough food for on-trail lunch and snacks, a jacket or rain jacket for colder weather conditions, and equipment necessary to change a flat tire and make minor trail-side repairs/adjustments. We recommended Camelback stye hydration packs with integrated water reservoirs.
- Summer Team athletes must be comfortable riding a mountain bike on rugged singletrack trails with varying topography. Athletes must be willing and ready to pedal their bikes and be outside on the trail in non-developed forest environments and open space areas for the majority of the day (~ 6 hours/day).
- Team athletes are expected to have basic foundational bike handling skills including balancing & pedaling, shifting, and braking.
